Embracing the midlife crisis

So I turned 40 this year, and while I 'celebrated' my birthday (by falling asleep early on the couch, I believe), I spent some time reflecting on what I've done with my life.  It was a pretty sad list, let me tell ya.  I've made a decision - I'm putting together a bucket list of the places I want to visit and the things I want to do.  My list isn't super long right now, maybe 35 items, but I expect it to grow as I get out more, travel, meet new people, and reconnect with those that I have lost touch with.  Some of the items on the list are pretty typical - white water rafting, finishing my bachelor's degree, visiting New York City - but others are less typical, imo.  Those include items like eating fresh lobster in Maine, chasing a tornado, and swimming with otters (and I can't tell you how badly I want to swim with otters!).

Now for a little bit of background on me.  I spent almost 15 yrs working for a company I hated until they eliminated my job.  That is something that I will always be truly thankful for.  It forced me out of a comfort zone and made me look at what else was out there.  I just wasn't fond of the fact that I had to start a new career path at the age of 37.  I went from doing quality control in direct mail marketing to start a path where I'm specializing in electrophysiology medical supplies (think pacemakers).  During my time working in quality control, I sat at a desk far too much, and gained a lot of weight.  I met a guy, got engaged, bought a house, and then broke up with the guy.  Six months later, in August 2010, I connected with a great guy I met online and we've been together, but apart, ever since.  He lives about 600 miles away, so we see each other several times a year and talk almost every night.  We're both independent people, so this relationship works for us. This man introduced me to hiking.  The first time we met face to face, we went hiking in the Porcupine Mountains, which is in Michigan's upper peninsula.  We had a great time and go back up there at least once a year.  It's beautiful country.  When I decided to document this thing I'm doing, I went back to that place and took its name from there.  It all started with me being a fat girl on a mountain.  We'll see where the adventure goes from there.
